The other half of the Toyota and BMW collaboration has now come into fruition, and it could easily be argued that the Toyota half has been the more highly anticipated one. After months of teasing and numerous leaks, here is the all-new A90 Toyota Supra in all its glory.
Unless you have been living under a rock, you’ve already probably seen the Supra’s sheetmetal. Whether the leaks from Toyota Mexico were intentional or for clever PR remains to be seen, but now, everyone can finally appreciate the Supra’s looks. Numerous speculations were made about the Toyota FT-1 concept car previewing the Supra, and it looks like they were right. The new Supra debuts plenty of new design cues never before seen in any Toyota. The front end is characterized by three large air intakes, canards, and side vents that play a role in cooling the brakes. A steeply raked windshield, along with the double bubble roof, aerodynamic side skirts, and side vents, give the Supra a purposeful look. Meanwhile, the rear fascia is dominated by the large Supra emblem, integrated rear spoiler, slim LED tail lights, aggressive rear diffuser with twin exhausts, and an F1-inspired central brake light.
Step inside, and drivers are greeted to a mainly horizontal interior design. The horizontal line running across the dashboard is also where the climate vents are integrated. Hints from the A80 Supra are present in this new model, mainly the driver-centric layout that separates the driver from the front passenger. One can see numerous parts shared from the BMW Z4 or from other BMWs, namely the steering wheel, iDrive-based infotainment system with the rotary knob controller, electronic gear shifter, and numerous buttons dotted around the cabin. Drivers are also greeted to a fully digital instrument cluster.
Under the hood of the all-new Toyota Supra is BMW-sourced 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 petrol engine from the top trim Z4 M40i. It produces 335 hp and 494 Nm of torque, which is 47 hp less and 6 Nm less than from the BMW Z4 M40i. Power is sent through the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain combo enables the Supra to sprint from 0-100 kph in 4.1 seconds, making it the fastest car to wear the Toyota badge.
Despite being a collaborative effort with BMW, Toyota Gazoo Racing developed the Supra’s chassis in their own direction, letting the Supra offer a completely unique driving experience from the BMW Z4. A two-mode adaptive variable suspension is standard, continually adjusting the rear multi-link set-up and front double-joint spring struts. Further aiding the Supra’s handling its its perfect 50:50 weight distribution. 19-inch wheels are standard, which are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires sized 255/35 R19 at the front and 275/35 R19 at the rear.
As with many modern cars nowadays, the Supra is fitted as standard with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. Optional active safety and convenience features include full-speed adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, and rear-end collision warning.
In the US, the Supra will be sold in two variants: 3.0 and 3.0 Premium. A limited Launch Edition will also be sold, which is based on the 3.0 Premium. Prices will start at US$49,990 and will go on sale on June 2019.
