Toyota has finally unveiled the facelifted Fortuner alongside the equally-new Hilux. However, this is more than just a Fortuner with a prettier face, because Toyota has updated almost every aspect of their popular three-row midsize SUV/pick-up based passenger vehicle (PPV).
Starting with the exterior, Toyota has given the Fortuner two distinct styles. Most models will come with the standard look, which is the blue vehicle in the photos. At least in Thailand, the top-trim Fortuner is called the Legender, which looks significantly different from the pre-facelift model. Regardless of which variant is chosen, all get LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, new LED taillights, new alloy wheel designs, and revised front and rear bumpers. The Legender gets a black roof option, along with bigger 20-inch alloy wheels and a sleeker design for the LED headlights.
Step inside, and you’ll experience the Fortuner’s improved material and build quality for a more premium ambiance. Also, Toyota has finally added telescoping adjustment for the steering wheel and not just tilt. For the Thailand market, the standard Fortuner gets an 8-inch Toyota T-Connect infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, while the top-trim Legender gets a bigger 9-inch unit with Apple CarPlay, ambient lighting on the doors, center console, and footwells, wireless charging, and a 9-speaker JBL sound system. Also exclusive to the Legender is a hands-free power liftgate and two-tone leather interior.
As for the engine, most variants will be powered by the same 2.4-liter inline-4 turbo diesel engine that produces 150 hp and 343 Nm for the 6-speed manual and 400 Nm for the 6-speed automatic, with both configurations driving the rear wheels. The 2.8-liter diesel engine gets a power bump for this year–now producing 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque. This engine is exclusive to the Legender and is equipped as standard with a 6-speed automatic and 4WD.
Toyota is also keen to note that the Fortuner’s 850 rpm idle has been reduced to 680 rpm for better traction when going off-road and increased fuel efficiency. The Fortuner’s ride and handling have also been tweaked for better comfort and handling.
For the first time ever, Toyota Safety Sense–which is the brand’s suite of semi-autonomous driver-assist features, is now available for the Fortuner. This includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, just to name a few.
The new Toyota Fortuner is now on sale in Thailand, while other markets will follow shortly. This, of course, includes the Philippines.
