Just like its sedan sibling, the all-new 2022 Subaru WRX Wagon has also made its ASEAN debut in the Philippines. Formerly called the Levorg, the Philippines is a priority market for the all-new WRX Wagon (and sedan) which means there won’t be any shortage of units for customers of the two sporty vehicles.
Unlike the WRX sedan, which comes with a controversial amount of body cladding, the WRX Wagon has a sleeker appearance. First previewed as a pre-production prototype at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, the all-new Subaru WRX Wagon features a much stronger front end, with its hexagonal grille flanked by angular C-shaped LED headlights and deeply sculpted front haunches. Moving towards the back, the all-new Levorg’s rear fascia is dominated by C-shaped LED taillights which are joined together by a slim chrome strip emphasizing the Levorg’s width. 18-inch alloy wheels come as standard, along with headlights that swivel as you change directions.
For the first time ever, a tS (tuned by STI) variant will be sold in the Philippines, and this variant benefits from a number of exterior, interior, and equipment enhancements. For its exterior, the WRX Wagon tS comes with chrome trim on the front bumper lip, unique 18-inch wheels, and enlarged muffler cutters for the twin exhaust tailpipes.
Moving towards the interior, the 2022 Subaru WRX Wagon carries a similar design theme, with padded soft-touch materials on the dash and doors. An 11.6-inch Subaru Starlink portrait touch screen comes as standard, and this comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Leather upholstery also comes as standard, and so are power adjustments for the front seats, and a sunroof.
Splurging for the tS variant adds a plethora of STI logos inside the vehicle, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and a hands-free powered tailgate, in which the Subaru emblem hides a sensor where you can place your elbow or hands to open the tailgate.
Powering the 2022 Subaru WRX is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine from the Evoltis. In this case, it produces 271 hp and 350 Nm, of torque. Despite the bigger engine, this represents a mere 3 hp gain over the previous 2.0-liter turbo engine, while torque remains the same. Subaru did say that the bigger engine has a meatier torque curve, and this results in a 0-100 kph time of 6.1 seconds with the new sports CVT–marketed as the Subaru Performance Transmission. Of course, since this is a Subaru, this sports sedan comes with Symmetrical AWD as standard.
If you splurge for the WRX Wagon tS, you will also benefit from adaptive dampers, which constantly monitor road conditions as well as adjust the firmness of the suspension depending on the drive mode.
The 2022 Subaru WRX Wagon also benefits from the brand’s latest EyeSight 4.0 suite of advanced driver-assistance tech. Just like in the Outback, the WRX Wagon is equipped with the following features:
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering Function
- Pre-Collision Braking with Autonomous Emergency Steering
- Pre-Collision Throttle Management
- Lane Departure Warning with Lane Departure Prevention
- Lane Sway Warning
- Lead Vehicle Start Alert
In addition, the WRX CVT also comes with a Driver Monitoring System (DMS), which is both a safety and a convenience feature. Through an infrared sensor, DMS is able to remember your vehicle settings based on your face, but more importantly, it will warn you if you look away from the road or use your phone while driving.
