2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Gets Updated Fortuner’s Diesel Engine

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado gets the same updated 204 hp turbo diesel engine that's also found in the refreshed Toyota Fortuner.

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado gets an upgrade in Japan in the form of a new diesel engine. Globally, the Prado is available with the 1GR-FE 4.0-liter V6 naturally-aspirated gasoline, the 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter inline-4 turbo diesel that’s also found in the current Toyota Fortuner, and the old 1KD-FTV 3.0-liter inline-4 turbo diesel that dates back to the first-generation Fortuner. Unfortunately, our market is stuck with the old 3.0-liter diesel motor while the Land Cruiser Prado in Japan gets a significant power bump.

For the 2021 model year, the Land Cruiser Prado gets a revised version of the 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter inline-4 turbo diesel engine, which now produces 204 hp (up by 27 hp) and 500 Nm of torque (up by 50 Nm). If these figures sound familiar to you, it’s because this is the same engine under the hood of the recently unveiled 2021 Toyota Fortuner. With this engine, the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has the highest torque figure in any Prado in history.

In comparison, the most powerful gasoline engine in the Prado line-up globally is the aforementioned 4.0-liter V6 gasoline engine, which produces 271 hp and 381 Nm of torque. For the Japanese market, the other engine choice is a 2.7-liter inline-4 naturally-aspirated gasoline engine that’s also found in the Fortuner. This engine produces 161 hp and 245 Nm of torque, which aren’t exactly strong figures for a vehicle of this size.

As for the rest of the design, it still remains unchanged since its facelift in 2017. What’s new for 2021 is the new Black Edition variant, which swaps out all the chrome trims for gloss black trims.

The interior design remains largely the same, though Toyota has added a new 9-inch touch screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Also new for the 2021 Prado in Japan is Toyota Safety Sense, which adds automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, among other features.

With these upgrades and a significant power bump, do you wish for Toyota Motor Philippines to offer the more powerful 2021 Land Cruiser Prado?
